Emoticons

An emoticon, or smiley, is a face or a small object built from characters already on a keyboard. Tilt your head to the left. In the classic form, the colon is the eyes, the hyphen is the nose, and the parenthesis is the mouth. Writers were setting faces into casual prose in the nineteenth century. The digital form that spread on the internet was proposed by Scott Fahlman of Carnegie Mellon University, in a message dated 19 September 1982.
