Symbol of healing and health.

The Bowl of Hygeia is a symbol that is used by pharmaceutical companies. It was first used on a coin in 1796. The symbol comes from an ancient Greek legend. It is a combination of symbols representing Aesculapius, the god of medicine, and his daughter and helper, Hygeia.

The snake wrapped around the bowl represents Aesculapius, and the bowl represents Hygeia. The snake is also the same symbol found on the symbol for medicine.

Today the symbol is used by pharmacists; the bowl represents a potion, and the snake represents healing.
